Kathryn Adair Karnes, 92, of Greenfield, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at her home.

She was born Feb. 8, 1919 near Leesburg, the daughter of the late Lewis G. and Stella Leota Vance Mercer.

Mrs. Karnes had worked as a bookkeeper for the UBIKO Milling Company and later worked for the Highland Farmers Exchange in Cobtown.  

She and her husband, William “Pat” Karnes, had owned and operated Karnes Fruit Farm in which she was a happy helper. She was a 1937 graduate of Leesburg High School which was the last class to graduate before becoming Fairfield High School. She was also a graduate of the Miller School of Business in Cincinnati and was a member of the Fall Creek Friends Church and the New Petersburg Social Civics Club.

She is survived by four children, Gil Karnes of Hillsboro, Lee (Darlene) Karnes of Greenfield, Nancy Karnes of Middletown and Steven (Patty) Karnes of Greenfield, eight grandchildren, Lucas Karnes, Chris Karnes, Bethany Holcomb, Rachel Thomas, William Karnes, Patrick Karnes, Meghann Karnes, Tara Karnes and Bryn Karnes, three great grandchildren and one sister, Hilda Lucas of Greenfield.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William D. “Pat” Karnes, whom she married in 1948; one son, Frederick Karnes and six sisters, Bess Duncan, Opal Murray, Maxine Patton, Frances Wiggins, Jeannette Miller and Jane Cannon.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Pastor Hurd Scott Latimer will officiate. Burial will follow in the Stringtown Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home.
