Katherine (Kate) Reffitt, 88, passed away peacefully Feb. 18, 2011 at Highland District Hospital.
Kate was born July 17, 1922 in Boston, Ohio, the daughter of the late Roy and Stella Stephens Deakyne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, and brothers Gordon and David Deakyne.
Kate was feisty and full of life, and she enjoyed life to its fullest. She was a loving mother and very proud of her family. After family, her loves in life were birds, music, flowers and crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ and a former member of Eastern Star and the Sweet Adelines of Highland Hills and Scioto Valley. Kate served Highland County as jail matron from 1957-1977 during Walt's tenure as sheriff. Kate touched many people's lives, and she will be missed by members of her family.
Kate is survived by her daughters, Judy (Wirt) Barrera of Thornville, Ohio, Stella (David) Jobe of Florida, and Jane (Larry) Sowers of Hilliard; her grandchildren, Rick (Cindy) Barrera, Lisa (Tom) Woods, Kim (Ron) Dodson, Kathy (Chuck) Howard, Scott Rapp, and Shannon (Ken) Spencer; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; special nephew, Doug (Angela) Reffitt; and special grandchildren, Ryan and Hailey Reffitt.
Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Hillsboro Church of Christ, 155 S. Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133 with John Porter officiating. Burial will follow at Hillsboro Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 at the Thompson Funeral Home.
