Charles Eugene Smith, 78, of Wilmington, formerly of the Rainsboro Community, died Thursday, April 15, 2010 at his residence.
He was born June 19, 1931 in Highland County, Ohio, the son of the late Albert I. and Ruth (Tompkins) Smith. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Smith.
Charles was a graduate of Greenfield's McClain High School. After graduation, he served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Charles' vocation was concrete work, having worked in construction until his retirement.
On September 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Edith (Legg) Smith, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and James Heard of Wilmington; daughter-in-law, Janice Everhart Smith of Bainbridge, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Agnes Smith of Hillsboro and Harold and Helen Smith of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Veronica (Doug) McIntosh, Tara Sue (Tony) McDonald, and Angie Williams; and three great-grandchildren, Michael and Mikalia McIntosh and Hayden Montero.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Burial will follow in the Locust Grove Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Highland County Honor Guard. Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home.
