Veteran Neil R. Scott honored posthumously by Hillsboro City Schools

A high school diploma was awarded posthumously to the family of a local veteran during a Veterans Day assembly at Hillsboro High School on Friday, Nov. 11.

A diploma issued by the high school on behalf of Neil R. Scott was presented to his family.

Born in Hillsboro in 1932, U.S. Army Private First Class Neil Roger Scott died while a prisoner of war on Jan. 5, 1951 in Korea, according to information provided by local veteran Denver Conley.

Information provided states the following about Scott’s service:

“Scott was a medic with the Medical Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. As a member of Task Force Smith, he was taken Prisoner of War while tending to his wounded comrades in South Korea on July 5, 1950, forced to march to North Korea on the Tiger Death March, and died while a prisoner at Hanjang-ni, North Korea on Jan. 5, 1951. His remains were never recovered.

“Private First Class Scott was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and a Purple Heart.”

On Veterans Day 2016, members of the Scott family accepted a posthumous Hillsboro High School diploma on Neil Scott's behalf.

The high school honored the family and local veterans during the Nov. 11 luncheon and ceremony.
