UPDATED Grandey says he will miss the people, but not the office stress

Highland County Prosecutor Jim Grandey has announced his retirement, effective May 31. Grandey said that personal reasons and state pension changes prompted the decision. He also wants to spend more time with his grandchildren.
A letter dated May 16 to Highland County Auditor Bill Fawley from Grandey stated, "This is to notify you that for personal reasons, I will be retiring as Highland County Prosecuting Attorney as of the close of business May 31, 2011.
Grandey told The Highland County Press Tuesday that changes in state retirement prompted the decision, but that he has personal reasons for leaving.
"There have been a lot of personal issues that I don't want to go into," Grandey said, "but the catalyst was the proposed changes (to state retirement). They are going to push those back to the fall now, but we had already made our decision. Several prosecutors across the state have made the same decision."
Grandey said that it was a joint decision he made with is wife, Madeleine.
"We both put our finger on the send key at the same time. It's just one of those things that we've been talking about," Grandey said. "I don't think it was any great secret that I had decided not to run for another term. Going to the end of the term wasn't going to make much of a difference to my actual pension."
Grandey would have been up for re-election in 2012.
"I just hope that we've done something over the last few years," Grandey said. "I know we haven't always done everything perfectly, but we tried to do what was best, and that is the only way I can look at it."
Grandey said that he is looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren, but that he is going to miss the people he worked with.
"I'm going to miss it," Grandey said. "I'm going to miss the people. The stress and that kind of stuff I wont' miss, but there are an awful lot of good people in this county. I will still be around. Madeleine and I aren't going anywhere."
The Highland County Republican Central Committee will appoint a replacement, but a meeting date has not yet been scheduled.
