In a three-way race for the Jan. 3, 2017 term for Highland County commissioner, Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education member Terry Britton defeated Independent Alex Butler and Democrat Tara Campbell in the Tuesday, Nov. 8 general election.

With 31 of 31 precincts reporting and absentees in the 2016 general election, the following unofficial results have been posted by the Highland County Board of Elections: Britton received 7,050 votes; Butler received 5,651 votes; and Campbell received 3,717 votes.

During his campaign, the Republican candidate said that his decades of management experience at Hobart Corporation and work on the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education will bring valuable experience to the county commission.

“I have 42 years of work experience, and I will be a full-time commissioner,” Britton said.

Britton said that his vision for the county is growing the economy, with an emphasis on obtaining grants and outside funding and working to promote Rocky Fork Lake.

“Funding is the key to success,” Britton said. “Our working with the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission every year, a lot of funds come into the county through that organization. We’ve got to work very hard each year trying to get some of those funds channeled to Highland County. Without funding, nothing happens.”

Britton said that the current board of commissioners has done a great job working with current manufacturing companies, and he wants to continue to meet with the companies to bring new jobs to the area.
