Terry Britton accepts oath of office as county commissioner

Approximately 50 family members and friends gathered in the Highland County Courthouse Saturday, Dec. 31, as Terry L. Britton accepted his oath of office for a seat on the Highland County Board of Commissioners.
Prior to being sworn in by the Hon. Judge Kevin L. Greer, Britton thanked several people who encouraged him to run and assisted with his campaign.
Among those thanked by Britton included: Kevin and Kristy Greer; Mel and Bonnie Nicholas; Angela Matticks; Highland County Engineer Dean Otworth; Commissioners Tom Horst (ret.), Shane Wilkin and Jeff Duncan (and their respective spouses, Maggi, Kristy and Lydia); his "political roundtable" of Meredith Chaney, Tom Pennington, Doug Chaney and Ed Bates; Vernon and Janie Angles; Fred and Barb Yochum; Tim and Sandy Shoemaker; Jeff and Renee Parry; his sister, Bonnie Parr; his family, children T.J. and Misty and their families; and his wife, Bonnie.
"The last person is my rock – my wife, Bonnie," Britton said. "She is the mainstay of my life."
Britton shared a few of his campaign stories, including the time when one of his "loyal supporters," Ed Bates, accidentally put up the wrong political signs. "Ed is a very good person to have on your team," Britton said. "He drove all over the county for me. One time he thought he'd run out of signs, but then told me he had more signs in his garage. The next day he called for more signs. Ed explained that he'd been putting up Scott Bates signs for Fairfield school board instead of mine."
Britton also gave special thanks to his campaign treasurer, Jeff Parry, and to Dean Otworth for encouraging his candidacy early on.
Prior to administering the oath, Judge Greer said "Terry is patient, logical and will come up with decisions that are good for the county – whether politically popular or not."
Greer said he's worked with a lot of county commissioners during the past 37 years, and "The one we have starting next week will be as good as any."
"I know our friend Ernie (Blankenship) would be very proud of you. He's looking down and smiling."

Britton was elected to the Jan. 3, 2017 term for Highland County commissioner, after winning a three-way race on Nov. 8.
Britton defeated Independent Alex Butler and Democrat Tara Campbell in the general election. Britton received more than 7,000 votes.
During his campaign, the Republican candidate said that his decades of management experience at Hobart Corporation and work on the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education will bring valuable experience to the county commission.
“I have 42 years of work experience, and I will be a full-time commissioner,” Britton said.
Britton said that his vision for the county is growing the economy, with an emphasis on obtaining grants and outside funding and working to promote Rocky Fork Lake.
Britton said that the current board of commissioners has done a great job working with current manufacturing companies, and he wants to continue to meet with the companies to bring new jobs to the area.
