SSCC honors Bill Horne with Faculty Emeritus designation WATCH THE VIDEO

Honoring a life dedicated to students, and education, the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees has bestowed the honor of professor emeritus posthumously to Prof. Bill Horne.
During the board's monthly meeting April 13, held at the Appalachian Gateway Center at SSCC's South Campus in Fincastle, the board voted 8-0 to amend the college's definition of professor emeritus, and then immediately voted on a resolution conferring the title to Horne.
The resolution was read by board member Rory Ryan, a close friend of Horne's.
The resolution read, "Whereas Mr. Horne faithfully served Southern State Community College for more than 25 years, and whereas, Mr. Horne was consistently recognized for his outstanding instruction, academic leadership, dedication, and service by both students and colleagues, and whereas, the faculty senate of Southern State Community College has made the recommendation to bestow the rank of faculty emeritus upon Mr. Horne, and whereas, the president affirms that recommendation and brings that recommendation forward to the board of trusteees for consideration; therefore be it resolved, that the board of trustees wishes to posthumously confer the title of faculty emeritus upon Mr. Bill Horne."
Ryan recognized Horne's family members who were present, including his wife, Connie; mother, Kathryn; sister, Mary Jane Williams; and brother, Jim.
The board, and audience of college staff and administration members gave Horne a standing ovation, as his family members expressed their thanks for the honor.
According to the college policy, "Faculty Emeritus may be granted when a faculty member has made substantial contribution to the college through instruction, academic leadership, service to the college and community it serves, dedication to students ... A Faculty Emeritus is recognized as a valued contributor to the college."
SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys said that Horne was a friend to many - himself included - and that Horne's words of wisdom live on in his students.
Referencing Horne's last newspaper column "Be grateful for our greatest gift," written the night before he died and published in The Highland County Press, Boys said that Horne's words continue to inspire.
"Bill taught us a lot in his unexpected departure," Boys said. "There were many stories from this past winter of people who made different decisions about how they would choose to spend their time, because of the message Bill left for us in our last editorial."
An enlarged, framed copy of the column, along with Horne's photo, will be displayed at the SSCC South Campus, "where he spent so much of his time, gave of himself in such a deep way," Boys said. "That will be a cherished reminder to all of us of the legacy he has left."
