Silent auction donations sought to benefit Gullett Memorial Scholarship
The PFC Zachary R. Gullett Memorial Scholarship Trust Benefit Spaghetti Dinner is set for Saturday, May 17 from 4-7 p.m.
The event will be held at VFW Post 9094 on Route 50 in Hillsboro and will also include a silent auction and raffle.
The Gullett family is seeking items to be donated for a silent auction. Themed baskets will be made with the donated items, and the auction will be held to benefit the scholarship trust the evening of the benefit dinner.
Any donations from individuals or businesses would be greatly appreciated.
Gullett was born in Dayton on July 3, 1986. He was a 2004 graduate of Hillsboro High School, where he participated in marching band, drama, symphonic choir and football. He was also a member of the Military Police Regimental association. In 2005, Gullett attended Ohio University-Chillicothe and graduated with a certificate of completion in law enforcement.

Gullett enlisted in the Army on Feb. 23, 2006 and reported to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. for One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as a military policeman. He graduated from OSUT on Aug. 8, 2006.
Upon completion of his training, Gullett reported to the 984th MP Co., Ft. Carson, Colo. on Aug. 18, 2006. He was deployed to Iraq on Sept. 16, 2006 and was stationed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq. He was very proud to be a military police officer and was planning to pursue a career with the Ohio State Highway Patrol at the conclusion of his five years of enlistment with the U.S. Army.
Gullett returned to his squad in Iraq at midnight on May 1 after spending 15 days at home in Hillsboro, enjoying time with his family and friends. He died on Tuesday morning, May 1, 2007, after collapsing while doing his PT exercises with his squad.
Upon Gullett's death, a scholarship trust was established at Merchants National Bank in Hillsboro.
The PFC Zachary R. Gullett Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a senior graduating from Hillsboro High School pursuing a career in law enforcement and criminal justice. The first annual scholarship was given in 2007.
