Shaffer receives ‘Red Carpet Award’ from Secretary of State

Highland County Board of Elections clerk, precinct election official and volunteer Nancy Shaffer received an award from Secretary of State Jon Husted’s office during the board’s meeting on Feb. 2.
Regional liaison Elizabeth Hamad of the Secretary of State’s office presented Shaffer with the award Thursday.
In November, the Secretary of State’s office announced that Shaffer was one of four precinct election officials in the state to receive a Red Carpet Award “for their dedication to running elections in their communities.”

“Upon his election, Secretary Husted instituted the Precinct Election Official ‘Red Carpet Award’ in an effort to recognize the service and dedication of poll workers throughout Ohio,” according to a press release from the Secretary of State’s office. “This program is part of his ongoing work to aid Ohio’s 88 boards of elections with the recruitment, training and retention of good elections officials. Awardees are nominated by boards of election and chosen annually by the Secretary of State’s Office.”
The following information was written about Shaffer in the press release from Husted’s office: “Nancy Shaffer is not only a poll worker, but also works as the part-time clerk and volunteers when the board needs extra help. Between her great work ethic and her willingness to always lend a hand, Highland County Board of Elections is grateful to have her.”
"There are those who have fought and died for our ability to have our voices heard on Election Day, which is why we encourage Ohioans to always participate and always exercise their rights during election season," Secretary Husted said in the press release. “The honorees have done more than just make a day for their democracy, they've gone far above and beyond in their service and have earned this recognition."
Board of Elections director Debbie Craycraft, deputy director Heather Loudin and administrator Steve Witham nominated Shaffer this fall, calling Shaffer “a very valuable asset in each and every one” of her positions as part-time clerk, precinct election official and volunteer.
“She is our go-to worker at times we need to rearrange polling place assignments,” the nomination letter said. “She is always willing to work at any polling place in any capacity that we need. Because she works in the office, Nancy is very helpful at the polls to assist voters with the provisional voter ballots process.
“In this day and age, volunteering is somewhat of a past time, but Nancy Shaffer has no problem with stepping up and lending a hand to get a job done even if it is on her own time. She understands the budget woes that face this office and also understands the mounds of work to be done.”
