Penn Township signs fire contract

The Penn Township Trustees and the Board of the Highland County North Joint Fire and Ambulance District in Leesburg have entered into a contract, effective July 1, 2011, expanding Highland County North emergency services into areas of southern Penn Township formerly served by the City of Hillsboro.  

 

Penn Township has previously contracted with the Highland County North district to provide services in northern Penn Township for the past several years. The northwest areas of Penn will continue to be a part of the Clinton-Highland Joint Fire District, whose headquarters are located in New Vienna.

 

The contract is a one year agreement which is automatically renewable, and can be cancelled by either party.  

 

The cost of fire coverage for Penn Township is $22,000 annually, paid by the Township in two semi-annual payments. Users of the ambulance service in Penn Township will continue to be billed using what is commonly referred to as "hard billing." This means that patients'  insurance carriers will be billed for all ambulance runs, and the patient will be responsible for any amounts not paid by their insurance coverage.

 

The Highland County North district firehouse is located in Leesburg on the grounds of the old Fairfield High School. Visitors are welcome. In addition to Chief Kenny Stevens Jr. and clerk Debbie Lawwell, the department has three full time certified EMTs serving 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, plus an additional nine volunteer certified EMTs, and 20 certified volunteer Firefighters. 

 

Discussions regarding additional full-time personnel are underway, and are expected to be concluded this summer.
