Lynchburg native Jeremy Bingaman serves aboard Navy warship in Mayport

MAYPORT, Fla. - Petty Officer 2nd Class Jeremy Bingaman, a native of Lynchburg, Ohio, serves aboard USS Delbert D. Black, a U.S. Navy warship operating out of Mayport, Florida.

Bingaman graduated from Lynchburg-Clay High School in 2020.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Lynchburg.

“The best lesson I learned from my hometown is the importance of community,” Bingaman said. "Being from a rural area and growing up in a tight community really taught me to appreciate people's differences and recognizing individuality."

Bingaman joined the Navy five years ago. Today, Bingaman serves as a fire controlman.

“Joining the military is an ongoing tradition in my family, who have served in the Army, Navy and Air Force,” Bingaman said. "I joined the Navy specifically to follow in my late grandfather, Ralph's, footsteps. He served during WWII as a boatswain’s mate and is a shellback for the USS Leyte Gulf."

A Navy destroyer, USS Delbert D. Black, is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with Tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a Phalanx close-in weapons system.

More than 300 sailors serve aboard USS Delbert D. Black. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry, along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times, according to Navy officials.
