Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter Rreceives awards at National FFA Convention

The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 21-24, 2009. The group enjoyed many educational tours. We went to Metamora, Indiana where we toured a grist mill and took a horse drawn canal boat ride. At the Not Just Popcorn facility, we learned that they make over 285 flavors of popcorn. Such as biscuits and gravy flavored to Mountain Dew flavored popcorn. Next we toured the Tyson Swine Harvest Facility in Logansport, Indiana. At the Cargill plant in Layfette, Indiana we learned how soybeans are processed into soybean oil. Afterwards we attended the Bulls & Bronc's Season Finale. We enjoyed many speakers such as all the National FFA Officers, Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs, and Josh Sundquist, a Paralympics ski racer. A highlight of the event was cheering for James Covert, a graduate from Lynchburg-Clay, when he received his American Degree. James is the son of David and Terry Covert. The American FFA Degree is the highest award an FFA member can earn. Requirements include earning $7,500 from their agriculture projects and being an active member of the chapter. James also received a Gold Rating on his Specialty Animal Proficiency Application on the national level. His application was about his Supervised Agriculture Education (SAE) project which was his goats. Lynchburg-Clay FFA received the 3-Star National Chapter Award. It's the highest honor that a chapter can be rewarded based on their FFA activities. Representing Lynchburg-Clay FFA on stage to receive the award was Chapter President Rachel Clonch and Treasurer Brad Keltner.
