Husted to visit Highland County for primary election

The Office of the Highland County Board of Elections is gearing up for the primary election Tuesday, as well as a visit from Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.
Director of Elections Steven Witham said that six precincts will be open Tuesday - and only one of which is not in Hillsboro.
Republican voters in Hillsboro will choose a mayor candidate from three candidates - Rod Daniels, Drew Hastings and Terry Mikkelsen. There is no Democratic candidate, and the winner of the race will face Independent candidate John Levo in the November general election.
A Brush Creek precinct in Sinking Spring will be open because the precinct overlaps with Adams County, and voters will decide on a levy for the Adams County/Ohio Valley School District. According to the board of elections website, the levy 9.4 mills to help the district avoid a deficit. The levy will bring in $3,000,000 over five years.
Husted's office has not specified when he will be in Highland County, as he is stopping in other counties beforehand. Witham said that he is scheduled to make an appearance sometime over the course of election day.
Witham said the office has been surprised at a relatively low number of voters that have turned out for early voting and absentees, with 97 in the weeks leading up to election day, and 11 in-office voters Monday. The Monday voters will be added in during the count Tuesday.
"All three (mayoral) candidates did a lot of door to door and we really thought we'd see a better turnout," Witham said. "We thought we would have quite a few voters beforehand, and not a lot at the polls."
Because of the low pre-voting, Witham said he does not expect a large turnout at the polls Tuesday, but he is hoping that voters will come out.
The polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
The board office hopes to have results posted by 8:45 p.m.
