Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has announced the most populous counties for each of the 16 new Congressional districts for Ohio.
“Ensuring we take the steps necessary to adequately prepare for our elections is priority one for my office. One of the best ways we can achieve this goal is to provide essential information to voters and candidates in a timely manner,” Secretary Husted said.
“In light of the shift in Ohio’s population and the resulting loss of two Congressional seats, we felt it important to communicate this information to those participating in the signature gathering process.”
The Ohio General Assembly approved a redistricting plan that places Highland County in the new 15th Congressional district.
The district has Highland County in the southwest corner of a horseshoe-shaped congressional district. Other than a portion of Ross County to the east, all of Highland County's neighboring counties are in other districts in this proposal. Fayette County would be a part of the 10th District, while Clinton, Brown, Adams, Pike and a portion of Ross counties would be part of the Second District.
The most populated county in the 15th Congressional District is Franklin.
Ohio lost two Congressional districts following the 2010 census, due to slow population growth.
To file as a candidate for Congress, individuals must collect signatures from registered voters living in the district they wish to represent. The information being released today will offer guidance for those individuals running for Congress in 2012 by providing information that will help to avoid confusion when collecting signatures to file as a candidate. The filing deadline for congressional candidates appearing for party nomination in the March primary election is Dec. 7, 2011.
The most populous counties for each Congressional district are as follows:
District 1: Hamilton
District 2: Hamilton
