HPD hiring dispatcher to fill vacancy left by retiring officer
The Hillsboro Police Department is taking applications for a communications officer, after a current dispatcher was moved up to fill the position of a retiring sergeant.
Hillsboro Police Chief Nick Thompson said that Sgt. Greg Barr is retiring from the HPD, effective March 31.
The HPD is currently short five officers, in accordance with city ordinances on staffing levels, the chief said.
Thompson said that a current HPD dispatcher will move up to an officer's position, leaving a vacancy in the communications division. The new hire will prevent the department from becoming six officers down.
"We have a total of four communications officers," Thompson said. "This makes an opening for a dispatcher when the current communications officer moves up."
The dispatcher position pays $34,236 annually.
Prior to his leaving office, former Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink had advocated Hillsboro City Council to consider hiring more police officers, and some city residents had addressed council on creating a larger police presence. The matter was placed in council's finance and safety committees for review, but budgetary constraints prevented further action.
Anyone interested in applying for the job can pick up a job description and application at the Hillsboro City Building.
