Violet Morgan
(1898-1983)
Violet Morgan was an author, teacher and Highland County historian who wrote Folklore of Highland County and Squaw Winter. These books are now collector’s items.
Miss Morgan was born in Hillsboro and attended kindergarten at Miss Dunn’s school at age four. She attended Webster School and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1914 at the age of 16. There, she wrote the class poem and performed the lead in the class play, “The Taming of the Shrew.”
Miss Morgan attended Miami University and completed her education at Wilmington College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught in the Highland County schools for over 40 years.
Miss Morgan had a great hobby of learning about the “Hill” people who lived in the Carmel area. She perhaps knew more about these people than any other person. She wrote many articles about them and their lives.
She also wrote columns for The Columbus Dispatch and other publications, often working under the pen name of Violet Turner.
She was a member of the National Honor Society, Past Regent of the DAR, chairwoman of the Highland County Martha Kinney Cooper Association in Columbus, member of the Highland County Teachers Association, honorary member of the Lenape Indian Tribe and a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
