Historical Society celebrates 50th year of Highland House Museum

Since Jan. 9, 2016, The Highland County Press has published weekly brief articles of the 52 current members of the Highland County Historical Society Hall of Fame.
The museum records so far have not divulged to searchers just when the Hall of Fame was started, but of course, it had to be some time after 1965 when the Society was formed and continues today through the 50th anniversary of the Society in 2015 and the 50th anniversary of the Highland House Museum in 2016.
In October 2016, three additional persons were named to this group to be inducted in the spring of 2017. They are Charles Leslie Collier, radio broadcaster; John Edward Hull, four-star general; and Clara Gertrude Weishaupt, professor and author. The induction ceremony will be May 28, 2017, Memorial Day.
Perhaps repeating myself, as I often do, this project of bringing these people to you has been of significant importance and benefit to me. As a 1979 newcomer (smiling here) to Highland County, it has introduced me to the folks who have made this county unique. So to speak, they have mentored me into more of a sense of belonging than I previously felt.
Working with the restructured Board of the Highland County Historical Society since 2013 has allowed me to promote and share that opportunity with others.
Sharing that purpose, the people working with this Society cannot be numbered, and their effort enriches all of us. The doors are open for additional membership and volunteering whether you are a newcomer or someone who has been here a lifetime and wants to contribute your own knowledge and experience. Museum Director Vicki Knauff at 393-3392 will be glad to take your call.
You might begin to volunteer, whether or not you are a member, by nominating someone to the Hall of Fame. There are so many obviously qualified persons who would enhance the Hall. To obtain the user-friendly nomination form, go to hchistoricalsociety.weebly.com or call Vicki, who will provide you with a hard copy.
Finally, we thank this newspaper for giving us this space for two years. First, for the series of information in 2015 about the Society in celebration of its 50th anniversary, and then for the Hall of Fame series in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Highland House.
