Dr. James R. Hull
1917-1991


Dr. James R. Hull was a basketball star at The Ohio State University and later a distinguished orthodontist.

Hull was born in Leesburg, Ohio on Feb. 15, 1917 and graduated from McClain High School in 1935, the same year he was named All-Ohio in both football and basketball.

At Ohio State, he was a member of the varsity basketball team in 1937, 1938 and 1939. He was elected team captain in 1939.

That same year, he was selected as the first All-American in basketball from Ohio State.

In the field of dentistry, Dr. Hull received his degree from Ohio State in 1943, specializing in orthodontics. He served as assistant professor in the College of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. He was the second dentist to receive the Ohio State Distinguished Service Award.

James Hull married Betty Gale in 1942. They were parents of a daughter, Gale Ann.

After Betty’s death in 1972, he married Virginia Strieter.

Dr. Hull served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade.

James Hull is a Highland County hero, succeeding greatly – both athletically and professionally.
