A Hillsboro man was sentenced recently to two years in prison after pleading guilty to failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

As previously reported, Derrick Osborne, 34, of Hillsboro was indicted on the third-degree felony charge by a Highland County grand jury in August. He pleaded guilty to the charge in December, according to court records.

According to a bill of particulars, on or about June 28, sheriff’s deputies located Osborne, who at the time had outstanding warrants, in a vehicle outside a Rocky Fork Lake-area residence. Officers commanded Osborne “to exit the vehicle,” the bill of particulars said, but Osborne was observed allegedly “yelling” back at deputies “while shuffling items in his lap and locking the car door.”

It is alleged that when a deputy attempted to break the car window to extricate Osborne, the defendant “started the vehicle … placed it in drive and sped away erratically.” The pursuit that followed included Osborne allegedly driving through the yard of the residence, hitting a ditch and driving in excess of 80 mph in 40 mph zones, as well as allegedly driving through a stop sign and on the wrong side of the roadway.

According to the bill of particulars, Osborne’s vehicle came to a stop when he allegedly “slid off the roadway and the vehicle became stuck in a culvert filled with trees,” after which it is alleged Osborne “fled on foot into the woods” and could not be located.

During a sentencing hearing Feb. 4, Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss sentenced Osborne to 24 months in prison, with two days of jail time credit. In addition, Osborne’s driver’s license will be suspended for three years, beginning Feb. 4.

Osborne was admitted into the Correctional Reception Center Feb. 6, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
