Hillsboro man drowns at Rocky Fork Lake UPDATED
An 18-year-old Hillsboro man drowned Tuesday afternoon while
swimming in a "non-designated" area in Rocky Fork Lake State
Park.
Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell said that the incident took place around 4 p.m. Terrell was notified from the hospital approximately one hour after the incident occurred.
The victim, Christopher Whiting, had recently graduated from Hillsboro High School, and Laurel Oaks Career Development Campus with a certificate in auto mechanics, according to reports.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
According to Capt. Dirk Puckett of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, the department received the emergency call just after 4 p.m. The initial call said that a 3-year-old had possibly drowned at the lake.
"While we were en route, we were notified that it was an 18-year-old," Puckett said. "When we arrived on scene, they were just pulling the male victim from the water. We initiated CPR and transported him to Highland District Hospital."
Puckett said that there were many people who were swimming on North Beach at the lake, located off of North Shore Drive.
"He had been with several people, and they had searched for him when he went under. They were the ones who were pulling him from the water as we arrived."
