Art, love and music set the stage and tell the story of an American mother and daughter abroad in Italy in Hillsboro High School's production of "The Light in the Piazza," with book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, playing in the Hillsboro High School Cafetorium on Nov. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and on Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.
Directed by David White and Benjamin Gullett, "The Light in the Piazza," which won six 2005 Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards stars Meredith Keister as Margaret Johnson, a protective Southern matron, McCaylee Priest as her daughter Clara, a beautiful 26-year-old American traveling abroad, and Jerry Bailey as Fabrizio Naccarelli, a 20-year-old Italian suitor who barely speaks English and is the source of the romantic tension central to the story.
The musical, based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, is set in the summer of 1953 and tells the story of a mother and daughter traveling through Italy, the daughter’s romance with a handsome, high-spirited Florentine, and the mother’s determined efforts to keep the two apart. The beautiful songs echo the romantic feelings of love leading composer Guettel to be praised for capturing “that transcendent, irrational state familiar to anyone who has fallen head over heels in love” (The New York Times) in his score for "The Light in the Piazza."
Composer Guettel explains what audiences can expect: “With 'The Light in the Piazza,' I tried to write music that would sound like the experience of falling in love, to evoke the feeling of it, or memory, or wish. After all, there’s a piazza in every American city and I hope that our show brings something genuinely romantic.”
The cast will also feature Brynna Boone, Cody Crothers, Kelly Devine, Tess Parry, Quinn Pickering-Polstra and Anthony Schaible. Jacqueline Burnett, Jordan Dunseith, Jonathan Fletcher, Kaitlyn Hacker, Caitlin Kerley, Shaylee Simmons, and Alexandra Wilson round out the company.
"The Light in the Piazza" is associate directed by Liz Keister, stage managed by Micaela Countryman and Erin Chaney, with set fruition by Daniel Bragdon. Fulfilling other crew positions are: Savannah Cameron, Karyssa Creager, Jonathan Gillman, Marissa Hollen, Haleigh Lovett and Gabbi Miller.
Tickets for "The Light in the Piazza" can be purchased each night of the performance for $8.
