The Highland County YMCA has announced its grand re-opening and Healthy Kids Day Festival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 26.

People of all ages are invited to the YMCA on April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a free day of fun activities, entertainment, free fitness demonstrations, music performances, sports clinics, and free family swim time.

According to Mike Lozano, interim executive director of the YMCA, “Obesity rates in children have doubled in the last decade. It is critical for parents, teachers, and other influential adults to recognize that all kinds of physical activities that build character as well as muscles can transform inactive, overweight and potentially unhealthy children into active, enthusiastic take-charge adults.

"Today’s children are more inclined to spend too much time in front of the computer, television or on the cell phone. This leaves less time for regular exercise.”

Lozano said in celebration of Healthy Kids Day the YMCA is encouraging kids and their parents to come out and find out about all the fun and healthy things to do at the YMCA and throughout the community. He said there will be groups like Noreen’s School of Dance performing on the main stage.

Many people don’t know that the YMCA invented the sport of basketball. Today, the Y continues this sports tradition by offering sports all year round. We have every sports program from swim team to T-ball as well as basketball leagues. The Y also offers other youth programs such as karate and hip-hop dance classes.

Kids will also be able to get a close look at all the latest fire trucks and police cars. Kids can have fun jumping in our “bouncy House.” There will be free prizes and food from local restaurants such as Cow a Burger.

“We are excited about welcoming the community through our doors on this very special occasion,” Lozano said.

During the day, YMCA staff and volunteers will demonstrate how to use the new lines of cardiovascular and strength training equipment. While parents visit our community booths, kids can participate in basketball free throw shooting contests, sack races, crafts, and face painting.

The YMCA is a non-profit charitable organization that teaches and demonstrates positive Christian values. Caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are emphasized in all activities.

The Y helps the community by providing many underprivileged children with scholarships. Our goal is to make everyone aware of the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle and bringing our community closer together.
