The Highland County Historical Society will again ring in the new year with a New Year's Eve ringing of the bell outside the Highland House Museum on East Main Street in Hillsboro.

The society began the new tradition last year with Hillsboro City Councilman and Society board member Justin Harsha being selected to ring the bell in honor and memory of his dad, former Hillsboro Mayor Sandy Harsha, and in honor of former HCHS board member Lester Wallis, husband of historian emeritus Jean Wallis.

"It brought a tear to my eye – yet a smile – as I watched my nephew, Justin Harsha, ring the bell at the Highland County Historical Society, bringing in 2016 and celebrating their 50th anniversary," Susie (Harsha) Wagoner told The Highland County Press last year.

"For three generations, my family has actively been involved with the Society. They, along with so many others, have passionately worked to create a tribute to the history of our county."

This year's bell ringing will begin promptly at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31.

The community is welcomed to attend.
