Highland County Board of DD, in conjunction with Highland Housing Services, celebrated the completion of a new housing project with a ribbon cutting from the Highland County Chamber of Commerce, along with family, friends and members of the community, on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The open house celebrated the construction of a new home in Leesburg that will provide housing for Board of DD clients who have a disability but have the ability to live on their own with some assistance. The home will be able to house four people, and they will be responsible for the rent and utilities.

Highland Housing Services, Inc. was established by the Highland County Board of DD in 1997 to serve as a housing development corporation with the purpose of providing financing, acquisition and management of housing dedicated to individuals with developmental disabilities. Highland Housing Services, Inc. currently has a portfolio of 10 multi-family homes throughout Highland County.

“The project here is with Highland Housing, which is a nonprofit corporation that we formed many years ago with the county board, but since it has separated, and they have their own board,” said Superintendent for the Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities Larry Gray. “We have a huge need, and sometimes it’s very hard to find suitable housing in these smaller communities where people can live. We designed this house so it’s fully accessible from the front, so they can get in with a wheelchair, and it also has accessible bathrooms and wide doorways.”
