HCHS holds annual meeting, elects trustees

Fifty-one members of the Highland County Historical Society signed in for their annual meeting last night to participate in a full agenda of what has been accomplished in the past year and is planned for the coming year.

Newly elected to the Board of Trustees were Bob Brown and John Levo. Mary Jo Copeland was re-elected as President of Membership and Sue Boatman was elected as Vice President. Arlene Huffman was named Volunteer of the Year by Highland House Director Vicki Knauff.

Leland Pennington, chair of the Hall of Fame Committee, named the following persons to the Highland County Historical Society Hall of Fame: Charles Leslie Collier, radio broadcaster; John Edward Hull, four-star general; and Clara Gertrude Weishaupt, professor and author. The induction ceremony will be May 28, 2017, Memorial Day.

 


Justin Harsha, manager of the Scott House, and John Kellis described a grant received from the State of Ohio in the amount of $110,000 for the upgrading of the Scott House and listed the repairs to the Scott House anticipated to be accomplished. The grant is considered, Kellis explained, as part of the Capital Campaign which was approved at the 2014 General Membership meeting.

Other reports included:

• The removal of the panels from the Colony Theater for preservation by Avery Applegate;

• The receipt of a grant for $21,000 from Ohio Humanities to support the telling of the Lincoln Story by Pamela Nickell for Kati Burwinkel;

• Accomplishments and goals defined by Board Chair Jim Rooney and Director Vicki Knauff;

• Financial reports by Treasurer Rosemary Ryan;

• Plans for a Junior Historical Society by Mary Jo Copeland; and

• A proposed application to the Ohio Connections (formerly Ohio Historical Society) for digitization of paper archives by John Glaze and John Kellis.

• Oct. 16: Doorley Dinner, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

• Nov. 20: Children’s Tea Party, 2-3:30 p.m.

• Nov. 4: Open House Holiday & presale for members, 5-9 p.m.

• Nov. 5 – Dec. 18: Gift Shop open.
