Despite the cold temperatures Saturday, spirits were bright as the Lynchburg community, in conjunction with the Freestore Foodbank of Cincinnati, met under the water tower on Pearl Street in Lynchburg to hand out 10,000 pounds of food December 5 to assist income-eligible families.
Shortly after the Freestore's refrigerated truck pulled into the village, local residents and members of area churches, including Peace Lutheran Church and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, started unloading and distributing bread, meat and canned goods.
Leftover items were divided between the food pantries at Samaritan Outreach Services and the Pearl Street Church of Christ.
A non-profit emergency food and services provider, the Freestore Foodbank distributes over 10 million pounds of food annually through over 400 member agencies in 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
The Freestore has targeted Highland County and is looking for local leaders, clubs and churches to sponsor shipments of food to the county. The organization will deliver 5,000 pounds of food to the county for a program cost of $500.
