More than 40 percent of Highland County voters turned out Tuesday to cast their votes in Ohio's midterm election.
According to the Highland County Board of Elections, 27,608 ballots, including absentee ballots, were cast in the county.

Steve Witham, director of elections at the Highland County Board of Elections said that other than a few minor technical problems, such as printers issues which were quickly amended, it has been a smooth election day.

"It's been smooth. We've had the normal election day issues, a printer wasn't snapped down all the way, or paper that gets stuck," Witham said. "But people are really good and trained to the point where something happens, they can get it fixed quick. We've really had no major problems at all, and that's what we like to see."

All absentee ballots were scanned prior to the closing of the polls and input into the system using the board's new ballot scanner. That saved the board hours of work in counting them by hand, and absentee votes were included when the board released its first round of cumulative results.

The board has received 2,675 absentee ballots, Witham said, with more than 700 people voting in the office. In-office voting has a considerable cost savings to the county, he said, which saves the office from having to mail out ballots.
