The Highland Holiday Community Association and the Highland County Sheriff's Office recently hosted a drug awareness class at the AmVets. All Rocky Fork Lake area residents were invited to attend.

Sheriff Ron Ward, Det. Richard Warner and Det. Denny Kirk gave a presentation on drug awareness. Anneka Collins, the interim Highland County prosecuting attorney, provided information on how the court system works and penalizes the drug offenders.

According to a news release from Rose Shinkle, treasurer of the Highland Holiday Community Association, Paint Township is ranked second behind Liberty Township in total arrests for 2010 in Highland County. Arrests in 2010 included 299, with 68 felonies .

The detectives discussed meth labs and what to look for involving meth production.

From October 2009 to October 2010, 35 meth labs were eliminated in Highland County, Shinkle said.

Also discussed were heroin, cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs.

The sheriff's office requested the association and community call the anonymous tip line at (937) 840-6243 and leave a tip on any drug activity they feel may be happening in their neighborhood, the news release stated.

"We, as parents, grandparents, community members and neighbors need to be actively involved in this process," Shinkle said. "We do not want Paint Township to be known for drug activity."[[In-content Ad]]
