Dr. Michael Newman joins Clinton County treatment team

WILMINGTON — Dr. Michael Newman, a semi-retired general surgeon, has been named the medical coordinator for the You-Turn Recovery Docket, the specialized program within Clinton County Common Pleas Court which focuses on offenders who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs.
Judge John W. (Tim) Rudduck said Dr. Newman’s addition to the treatment team as a part-time contract employee is made possible by the recent $199,000 grant that the court received from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
The grant is intended to assist communities in managing the lowest level of non-violent felony offenders through more effective and less costly alternatives to prison, including incarceration in the Clinton County Jail as well as mental health counseling, alcohol and other drug counseling and medically-assisted treatment when appropriate.
Dr. Newman has been a close observer of the drug docket since it was initiated two years ago and has already completed preliminary continuing medical education requirements that would allow him to prescribe medications designed to treat those addicted to drugs and alcohol.
In this new role, Dr. Newman will bring his medical expertise to the docket’s treatment team, which is led by the judge and includes docket participants’ case managers, probation officers and alcohol and other drug treatment counselors.
“Dr. Newman’s interest in this problem in our community and his medical knowledge will provide great insight to the treatment team and will be of individual benefit to those participating in the drug docket,” Judge Rudduck said. “Drug and alcohol addiction is a health issue and having Dr. Newman join us is a perfect utilization of these grant funds.”
Dr. Newman will review case files and historical data; meet with other members of the team and participants when appropriate; will attend training and seminars to learn more about addiction issues; and will seek collaborations with appropriate local organizations, including law enforcement, health care services and local employers.
Dr. Newman received a bachelor’s of arts degree in psychology cum laude and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He did a residency in general surgery at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, Calif.
A long-time resident of Wilmington who formerly practiced at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Dr. Newman has practiced at Fayette County Memorial Hospital in Washington Court House since 2006.
He is past president of the Clinton County Unit of the American Cancer Society and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Clinton County Division.
