Dr. Jeffrey Beery releases annual coroner's report for 2016

Highland County Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Beery has released a report of coroner’s cases for the year 2016.
Fifty cases were included in the report, as Beery told The Highland County Press he only included deaths that were considered suspicious or initially considered unnatural causes in the report.
Beery said this is the largest number of cases he’s seen in a calendar year.
“This is a record,” Beery said. “This isn’t counting natural causes.
“Last year was the second-most, with 41 cases in 2015, 29 in 2014 and 30 in 2013.”
The following statistics were provided by Beery:
• The manner of death included 14 accidental deaths, 12 suicides, eight homicides, seven natural causes and nine were undetermined.
• The causes of death included 16 overdoses, eight gunshots, six vehicle crashes, two farm machinery accidents, one motorcycle accident and four cases of asphyxia.
• Cases were under the jurisdiction of the following offices: Highland County Sheriff’s Office, 27; Hillsboro Police Department, eight; Ohio State Highway Patrol, seven; Greenfield Police Department, six; Leesburg Police Department, two.
• Thirteen victims were found with alcohol in their systems.
• Of victims with found with drugs in their system, there were nine Fentanyl cases; seven marijuana cases; six heroin cases; five methamphetamine cases; four Clonazepam cases; three cocaine cases; three Xanax cases; three Valium cases; two Adderall cases; two designer opioid cases; one Suboxone case; one Seroquel case; one Ecstasy case; one Gabapentin case; one Hydrocodone case; and one Flexeril case.
• Of the overdose cases, eight victims were found to have two or more types of drugs or alcohol in their system: one victim was found to have four types; four victims had three types; three victims had two types.
• The presence of marijuana was found in three gunshot victims; meth was found in four gunshot victims; alcohol was found in six gunshot victims.
