Courthouse work set to begin

Renovation work is set to begin as early as Monday, Nov. 15 on the Highland County Courthouse.
The Highland County Board of Commissioners has entered into a $23,000 contract with Industrial First, Inc., for a number of exterior repairs to Ohio’s oldest courthouse in continuous use.
Weather permitting, workers from Industrial First will start Nov. 15. Equipment for the project is expected to be on site by Friday, Nov. 12.
With commissioner Gary Heaton on vacation, commissioners Shane Wilkin and Tom Horst met with Tom Meyer and Joe Bernstiel Wednesday to finalize the contract.
Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss also attended the meeting. The renovations are being funded by the offices of Judge Coss and Judge Kevin Greer.
“No general fund money is being use,” Wilkin said.
Commissioners also agreed to consider an estimate for roof repairs, if necessary, to the courthouse.
“There needs to be some budgeting for this,” Coss said. “I know money’s tight, but you can’t let your buildings fall down.”
Meyer told commissioners, “I’d like to see how much (expense) money I have in the project, once we get into it, and I’d like to see if we can use some of the money for a maintenance inspection.”
“I think having the roof inspected is worthwhile,” Coss said.
Horst agreed, saying, “I think we ought to go ahead with the project.
“Being the oldest continuously used courthouse in Ohio, we’d like to take care of it.”
Parking around the courthouse square will be temporarily limited during the project, which is expected to be completed by Nov. 30.
In other action, commissioners approved the following resolutions, all by 2-0 votes:
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund from County Miscellaneous, Unemployment, to Coroner, Contracts & Services for $3,600.
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund from County Miscellaneous, Unemployment, to TEC, Contracts & Services for $500.
• The authorization of a modification to the Engineer’s budget as follows: from Grant to Salary-Official for $500 and to Salary-Employees for $1,344, for a total of $1,844; and from Advertising and Printing to Other Expense for $1,986.68; and from Contracts & Services to Other Expense for
$15,000.
• The court requested a modification of funds in the amount of $34 from Group Home to Base Fringes and $325 from Group Home to P.E.R.S.
