Commissioners proclaim Special Olympics Day Sept. 24

The Highland County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Sept. 24 as Special Olympics Day in Highland County during their Wednesday, Sept. 7 board meeting.
Commissioner Tom Horst read the proclamation, and it was presented to Nathan Boatman, lead support specialist and Special Olympics coordinator for the Highland County Board of DD and Hills and Dales Training Center; Chris Hawk of Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools; Dennis Godlove; Dustin Turner; and Chris Tissot.
Boatman invited all of the Special Olympians from Bright Local School District, Fairfield Local Schools, Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools, Greenfield Exempted Village Schools, Hillsboro City Schools and Hills and Dales Training Center, their parents, family and friends to attend the event, from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 24 at the Lynchburg-Clay High School track. Boatman thanked the Hillsboro KFC and Ponderosa restaurants for donating food for the event. Concessions will also be available at the school.
According to Hawk, the Special Olympics locally has approximately 90 to 100 student-athletes in various age levels.

In other business, commissioners Horst and Jeff Duncan met with Greenfield representative Phil Clyburn regarding a proposed scenic waterways designation for Paint Creek from the Village of Greenfield to Paint Creek Lake.
“This is an effort to attract people to the village of Greenfield and just another piece of the puzzle,” Clyburn said.
He said the land along the proposed scenic waterway is all federal land, and there will be no highway restrictions involved.
“This also makes it easier to get a grant to clean up the waterway,” Clyburn said.
“I think it’s a good idea, and I would support it,” Horst said.
Duncan said that he, Clyburn and Highland County Engineer Dean Otworth discussed the proposal last week.
“Dean had some initial reservations about road crossings, but we don’t have any roadways in that area,” Duncan said. “I talked to Shane [Wilkin], and he has no reservations about it.”
Wilkin was not in attendance at the Sept. 7 meeting.
Clyburn said he’s also meeting with area township trustees.
Commissioners, by a 2-0 vote, passed a resolution to offer a letter of support for the proposed scenic waterways designation.

Horst also updated the board on the proposed mural to be placed in front of the Highland County Administration Building.
Horst said he is working on raising private funds, totaling approximately $7,000, for the mural, which will include images of various local landmarks. Anyone wishing to donate to the project can contact Horst.

Commissioners congratulated all of this year’s participants in the Highland County Fair and encouraged everyone to attend this year’s fair.

Commissioners passed a resolution by a 2-0 vote for a $5,000 transfer of funds for the Highland County Board of DD from Salaries to the State Teachers Retirement System.
