Commissioners proclaim Older Americans Month

Highland County Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeff Duncan signed a proclamation designating May 2016 as Older Americans Month in Highland County, with the theme "Aging is Everybody's Business," during their May 4 board meeting.
In reading the proclamation, Wilkin said "Ohio has 2.5 million residents over the age of 60 and our 60-plus population is growing more than 20 times faster than our overall population. These trends present both opportunities and challenges for Ohio and its communities to unleash the power possessed by our elders by providing supports and meaningful ways for our Golden Buckeyes to continue to grow, thrive and contribute.
"With more Ohioans living 'well beyond' 60, it is important to work together at all levels to help each other 'live well' beyond 60. This is not a goal that can be achieved by one or even a few groups working together. Indeed, aging is everybody's business."
Accepting the proclamation were Highland County Senior Citizens Center members Howard Kelley, Juanita Kelley (the 2015 Senior Citizen of the Year), and Susan Thornhill, and Jenni Dovyak-Lewis, Callie Reed and Susan Roades, all from the Area Agency on Aging District 7 (AAA7).
Highland County Senior Citizens Center Executive Director Mechell Frost was thanked for her service but was unable to attend the meeting.
According to Lewis, 505 people in Highland County receive services by the Area Agency on Aging District 7.
"AAA7 is a great resource for those folks 60 and older," Lewis said.
The Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. administers programs for the elderly funded by the state and federal governments. Federal funds under the Older Americans Act and the Health Care Financing Administration, as well as all state funds, are received through the Ohio Department of Aging. The Agency contracts with agencies and then channels funds through this network of service providers. These agency providers include senior centers, community action agencies, home health agencies, health departments, etc.
AAA7 consists of the following 10 counties: Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto, and Vinton.
