Commissioners plan for 2017 budget, sign proclamations

Now facing a potential $1.5 million budget deficit before the end of next year – as a result of voters’ rejection of the Children Services’ levy on the Nov. 8 ballot – Highland County commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeff Duncan and County Auditor Bill Fawley said revised budgets will be forthcoming.
“It’s important to note that the Children Services levy did not pass,” Wilkin said at the Wednesday, Nov. 9 board meeting. “That means a $1.5 million hole for next year. Bill (Fawley) has been working with the budget numbers (for 2017) both with the levy and without the levy. Things can get interesting real quick next year. We’ll start (in the budgeting process) with Bill’s numbers without the levy.”

In other news, Commissioner Duncan said he recently visited Hope House Christian Counseling Center in Sinking Spring.
“This is a faith-based counseling service in the southern part of the county,” Duncan said. “I had a chance to visit with them and they are doing good work.”

• Commissioners met with Highland County Homeless Shelter Director Greg Hawkins and signed a proclamation for National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week as they have in past years. Commissioner Wilkin read the proclamation.
• Commissioners also signed proclamations for the Highland District Hospital Home Health Services in recognition of National Home Care Month.
