City employees and officials celebrated Arbor Day by passing out pine trees to first-graders at Hillsboro Elementary School.

An annual tradition for the Hillsboro Street Department, the trees were purchased at the Highland County Soil and Water Conservation District's annual tree sale.

Street Department Superintendent Steve Pence said that the Hillsboro Elementary students study trees, and the saplings are a physical manifestation of the lessons.

Zink said that the city hopes that planting a tree will give students and their parents something to do together as a family.
