Hillsboro firefighters are on the scene of this West Main Street fire near at the former Highland Enterprise Lumber Company Sunday afternoon.

Other area fire departments are on the scene as well, including Marshall, Lynchburg, Faytteville, Mowrystown, Brush Creek, Wilmington and possibly others.

Burning embers reportedly crossed Main Street and caused a small fire at Community Markets (Great Scot) on the south side of West Main Street.

The Ohio state fire marshal has been called.

Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings and Police Chief Nick Thompson indicated the fire may be arson, as witnesses reportedly said people were running from the property prior to the fire.

According to Hastings, firefighters had concerns with local water pressure due to the city's aging infrastructure.

The Highland Enterprise Lumber Company closed in 2010, after serving the Highland County area and beyond since 1873.

The business served its last customer April 16 of last year, when Highland Enterprise closed its doors for the final time after after operating for 137 years, 77 years of which were operated by the same family.

As reported by The Highland County Press last year, former owner Bruce Lamb bought the business from his step-mother, Barbara, in 1988. Lamb has since sold the prioperty.

"Her first husband, Clarence Tucker, bought it around 1933," Lamb said. "He died in 1969. When she passed away, her kids didn't really know what to do with it, so I bought it and relocated from Atlanta, Ga."

Employees Brenda Barnes and Randy Pitzer rang up the hardware and lumber store's last customer, Keith Warner of Butler Springs.
