Braden Heizer of Fairfield wins Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest

Braden Heizer, a senior at Fairfield High School, was the winner of this year’s Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest.
The 2017 contest was held Tuesday, Feb. 28 during the Rotary Club’s luncheon at the Ponderosa Banquet Center.
Heizer’s presentation was on the topic of good decision-making.
Other finalists this year were Rachel Tracy of the Hillsboro Christian Academy, who spoke on illegal immigration, and Bryanna Buerkle of Hillsboro High School, who spoke about bullying.
Heizer, who won at Fairfield, was awarded $200, with $50 going to second-place winner Ailean Duffie.
Heizer was awarded an additional $300 by becoming the Rotary Club’s representative for the District 6670 Speech Contest, which will be Sunday, April 2 at Wright State University.
William Cassner was the first-place winner from Hillsboro Christian Academy, and was awarded $200. He was unable to attend the Feb. 28 contest. Rachel Tracy was the alternate and she presented. She received $50 for second place, as well as Hannah McIntyre, who also received $50. Buerkle won $200 for winning first at Hillsboro High School, and Caitlin Ahrmann received $50 for second place.
Each contestant must apply the Rotary Four-Way Test to the concepts of leadership, service to others and life experience. The Rotary Four-Way Speech Test is as follows:
• Is it the TRUTH?
• Is it FAIR to all concerned?
• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The speech is to be presented from memory without the aid of podium, notes, displays or props.
This year's judges were Jennifer West, Paulette Donley and Karie Emery.
Committee members Amatha Farrens and Karen Faust thanked Rotarians Ted Rosenmayer, Jenny Hilterbran, Debbie Rhude, Darrell Wilson, Dan Pearce, Kellie Kiser and Doug Ernst for their assistance.
Hillsboro Rotary Club was founded in October 1936. The local club is a member of Rotary International, with its roots in Evanston, Ill.
