Art for everyone at Fairfield schools WATCH THE VIDEO
In Italy, art-lovers have Michelangelo and his Sistine Chapel. A little closer to home, a rendition of those same Renaissance works are on display with just a glance toward the ceiling in the halls of Fairfield Local Schools.
For more than six years, advanced art students at Fairfield High School have been creating art projects out of the facilities ceiling tiles, transforming the halls, offices, and even the bus garage, into a virtual museum, exposing students to classic art, and showing off local talent.
The project has been embraced by faculty and staff, with requests for certain characters or cartoons. Aside from its aesthetic value, the art has shown to have some practical applications, with new students using the ceiling as a guide to find the right classrooms and to stay oriented in the maze of hallways.
Though there is not an official count, the works of art are numbered in the hundreds.
The idea for the project came from an initiative at a northern Ohio school, and Fairfield art teacher Tammie Garey said she wanted to try it out at Fairfield, and approached school officials on doing their own installation shortly after the doors opened on the new schools.
The elementary wing features Disney characters, the middle school wing is patrolled by super heros, and the high school hall takes its inspiration from classic art. The office spaces show their school spirit with various incarnations of the Fairfield Lions.
