Adena continues state partnership with Safe Communities Program

For a second consecutive year, Adena Health System is partnering with the Ohio Department of Public Safety to promote the Safe Communities Program.
The Ohio Safe Communities network uses local coalitions, like Adena, to deliver national traffic safety messages and programs throughout the year such as Click it or Ticket, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, Stay Alive-Don’t Text and Look Out for Motorcycles.
Since accidental deaths are the fourth-leading cause of death in Ross County, this year Adena and Ross County Safe Communities will be involved in even more community events and will continue to focus on building their partnership with other stakeholder groups within the community.

“It is important for us to partner with a variety of community groups because healthcare is not the only issue affecting our region,” said Macey Power, Adena Marketing Specialist and Ross County Safe Communities Program coordinator.
Among their tasks, Ross County Safe Communities conduct quarterly fatality review meetings to review accidents, observe and identify any trends that may be reoccurring. Currently, in addition to Adena, the coalition consists of local EMS and Fire Department members, the Safety Service Office, Health District, Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, State Farm Insurance, County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and the County Engineer’s Office.
During the last fatality review, the coalition evaluated the eight fatal accidents that occurred in Ross County from August-December 2016. Of those, 75 percent of the fatalities were due to drivers not wearing their seatbelts. Other trends noted were drivers had failed to yield, were speeding or had alcohol in their systems during the time of the crash.
“The importance of using a seatbelt and driving sober simply cannot be over-stated,” said Lieutenant Timothy Karwatske, Ohio State Highway Patrol. “Without question, these simple behaviors do more than any other to stack the odds in your favor of surviving a crash or minimizing injury.”
Ross County Safe Communities is hosting a free public Health, Safety and Fitness Expo on March 18 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Pickaway Ross Career & Tech Center.
