The earsplitting crunch of metal and shattering windshields broke the silence of a quiet Highland County Fairgrounds Thursday morning, followed by screams for help and the wail of sirens in the distance. As the "victims" tried in vain to free themselves from the twisted wreckage of two "crashed" vehicle, one body lay motionless in the broken glass.

Fake blood covered the ground and real smoke poured from a car and a truck set up by area first-responders to give Highland County students an intimate and realistic look at the dangers of drinking and using drugs.

The Highland County DARE Program, county fire and EMS programs, the Highland County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol set up a countrywide "Prom Promise" mock disaster in preparation for the upcoming prom season.

Jeff Bain, of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, said that approximately 750 juniors and seniors  from Hillsboro City Schools, Fairfield Local Schools, Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools, and Bright Local Schools attended the event. The mock disaster was designed to show them what law enforcement and fire and EMS crews do as they respond to a fatal car crash.

"If we reached one kid today, it was worth it," Bain said.
