The Highland County Democratic Central Committee met Thursday evening to consider the appointment of three people to replace outgoing members of the committee, along with the appointment of the party's representative on the Highland County Board of Elections.
The meeting was held in the basement of the Highland County Administration Building. Chairperson of the Highland County Democratic Party Dinah Phillips said during the meeting that, "There are three individuals who decided not to run on the ballot for central committee next year, and they have said they will go ahead and resign."
The committee voted unanimously to accept the resignations of Vicki Rhude, from Hillsboro southwest B; Debbie Ellison from Paint southeast; and Howard Easter, from Penn Township.
The committee also voted unanimously to appoint Pam Limes to Hillsboro southwest B; Samantha Matthews to Paint southeast; and Ron Davis to Penn Township.
There was discussion on the donation of funds to the campaigns of local Democratic candidates, as well as a possible carry-in dinner so that people can meet candidates prior to the primary election. In the only contested Democratic primary, Randy Mustard and Josh Patton will face each other in the March 6 primary election in the race for a seat on the Highland County Board of Commissioners. The winner of the primary will face Republican incumbent Tom Horst in the general election in November.
Additionally, there was discussion on a kickoff party for Pete Pence's campaign in the race to be Ohio's 91st District representative. Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is scheduled to be at the event, Jan. 12 at the Hillsboro Elks Lodge, at 451 Danville Pike. Pence will face Republican Cliff Rosenberger in the general election.
At 7:25 p.m. the meeting was adjourned, and the committee entered into a second session to consider the appointment of a representative to the Highland County Board of Elections. It was unanimously voted that Phillips - who has served on the board since 2003 - be appointed to the seat. The term begins in March. Democrat Andy West is currently the board of elections chairperson. The remaining two seats are filled by Republicans Kay Ayres and Steve Hunter.
