Lois J. Roads

Lois J. Roads, 90, passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023 at Trustwell Living at Bell Gardens Place in Hillsboro.

She was born Aug. 5, 1933 near Greenfield, the daughter of Floyd and Eva Marie (Waln) Jett. She was welcomed by her brother, Roger, and shared in a childhood which provided her with endless good memories.

She was raised on a farm and could be described as a tomboy. She loved nature and being outdoors.

After her graduation from Edward Lee McClain High School in 1951, she worked at J.C. Penney in Washington C.H. as a bookkeeper and office clerk. She later worked for Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company as an accounts receivable clerk.

On March 16, 1952, Lois married Lloyd C. Roads of Rainsboro. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Cheryl, and later were blessed with a son, Steven. The children also grew up on a farm, and the family enjoyed those years together. While living in the Rainsboro area, Lois taught the senior high Sunday school class and played the organ for services.

While the children were preschoolers, Lois started taking classes at Ohio University in Chillicothe. In 1962, with a Cadet Teaching Certificate in hand, Lois was hired to teach sixth grade at Greenfield Elementary School and taught there 17 years. She received her B.S. in education from Ohio University in 1965 and went on to receive her M.A. in counseling from Miami University. Later, she earned additional credits in administrative work and was hired as Director of Special Education, Curriculum Development, Staff Developmen and wrote and supervised a number of grants. She really enjoyed this work but confessed teaching was her first love.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served on the Highland County MRDD Board and also on the Highland County Board of Recovery Services.

After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and camping. On June 5, 1995, the family was faced with the sudden loss of Lloyd. Lois continued living on the farm until she moved to Washington C.H. to be near relatives needing more assistance. There she volunteered in the ER area of Fayette Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She was a member of Altrusa International of Washington C.H. for 25 years. While working in those two groups, she met and worked with many wonderful people and made many lasting friendships. Her free time was spent with her little dog, Daisy, with her two families, reading, working crossword puzzles and playing piano for her own pleasure.

She is survived by her son, Steven; brothers and sisters-in-law, George Roads and James and Gerry Roads; niece, Debbie (Troy) Chappelear; nephew, Richard (Amanda) Jett; nieces and nephews, Tina (Greg) Reed, Amy (Jerry) Cartwright, Kim (Dick) Hiatt, JoAnn Spears, Peggy (Willis) Sturdivant, Tim (Tammy) Roads, Doug Roads and Scott (Kelly) Roads; cousin, Lowell Waln; and many great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter; both parents; brother, Roger; in-laws, Homer and Naomi Roads; sisters-in-law, Ethel Jett, Patty Roads and Susan Roads; grandparents, Jett and Waln; brother-in-law, Robert Roads; nephew, David Roads; and baby niece, Lorie Roads.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield with Otis Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the funeral home.
