When will voters get a clue?

To the editor:
What more does it take for the people of this community, county, state, and nation to get a clue? The reason this country is struggling is primarily due to our government sticking its nose into too many issues government was never meant to be involved in. This has resulted in many programs that, while beneficial and necessary, should be undertaken by private individuals or organizations.
The only real way the government has to raise money to operate is by taxing the citizens. Guess what? The money available to fund all this needless bureaucracy has a limit. People cannot pay what they don't have. This is borne out in the abundance of sheriff's sales of real estate in the newspapers every week. The same principles apply to government. When the funding limits are reached, one must either stop creating more costly programs or find ways to operate them more efficiently to make the available funds cover the expenses.
There is no free lunch.
Someone, somewhere must bear the cost of growing the food, processing it, getting it to market and on to where it is prepared to be served. When will
the people realize that if we keep re-electing the same people that we criticize for the decisions they make, the same results will be obtained and no change will occur? Public offices were originally designed to be part-time duties carried out be people who then have to live with the results of their decisions just like everyone else does. That's why the Texas legislature only meets periodically. Unless and until our government realizes that paying as you go is the only way to operate, nothing will
change.
Until we elect those individuals who are committed to eliminating waste and needless programs, paying down the rampant public debt, and implementing a wholesale change in the way our government does business, decline will continue. If a business operated the way our government does, it would go out of business in short order.
Sincerely,
Dennis Egbert
