Thanks to our unsung local heroes

To the editor:
I had the experience, early one morning this week, of being without electricity. I saw flashing lights reflecting off my bedroom wall and went to the window out of curiosity.
There were five AEP trucks parked along my street. As I watched, two bucket trucks started their cumbersome rise to the top of the power pole, each with an electric company employee inside the bucket. It was dark and the rain was pouring.
Now, I realize that this is a job to these people and one for which they are well paid. As I watched them at work, it occurred to me that, not only did I not have light but I couldn’t have my morning coffee, couldn’t use my cordless phones, could only raise and lower my garage door manually, couldn’t use the Internet or watch the morning news, would have no heat nor hot water.
I could go on and on about the things that I take for granted suddenly being unavailable to me. The power is now restored and all is well in my personal world again, thanks to these people.
Many thanks to all the AEP employees, those I saw as well as those behind the scenes that we don’t see. It’s all in a days work to these people, but not to me. I’m writing to let them know how much I appreciate them for bringing me back into the 21st century and keeping me comfortable.
I also want to thank ALL those people who work in the utility and service industries. When we are without our water, sewer, electricity, telephone, law enforcement, EMS, furnace repair, plumbers, it’s difficult to cope. Not impossible but difficult.
Thanks again,
Harriet Fenner
