Stop and think before voting
To the editor:
Although I am not in the 1st Congressional District, I watched the debate between ex-congressman Steve Chabot and Steve Driehaus and found that it had national implications, especially in a year in which the Republican Party is doing its best to nationalize the election.
Tip O'neill , once speaker of the House, is quoted as saying,"All politics is local;" but that is definitely not the case this year. Coast to coast, Republicans are running practically identical anti-President Obama, anti-Speaker Pelosi, anti-Majority Leader Harry Reid, anti-Government campaigns using the same carefully researched phrases designed to produce automatic knee jerk reactions that Steve Chabot used over and over in the debate.
Instead of referring to the health care reform bill, Chabot called it "Obama Care" and declared it to be a government takeover of health care in spite of the fact that President Obama was widely criticized for being too hands off and allowing Congress to put it together and that his primary involvement was to sanction cave-ins to Republicans that took a government run option off the table.
Over and over, Chabot followed the national Republican script and referred to a failed stimulus package which he insisted created no jobs while the truth is that the stimulus increased employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million people, compared with what employment would have been otherwise. That’s according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Over and over, Chabot insisted, as Republican candidates have coast to coast, that the Health Care Reform Bill will cost trillions of dollars but, according to the non partisan CBO and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), enacting the bill that Steve Chabot and republican candidates coast to coast promise to repeal, will produce a net reduction in federal deficits of $143 billion over the 2010-2019 period.
Over and over Chabot, as republican candidates coast to coast have lock step done, pointed out that his opponent has almost always voted with Nancy Pelosi and thus against the American people, ignoring the fact that Nancy Pelosi is doing what her constituency elected her to do and that by siding with her Steve Driehaus is doing what he said he would do when elected.
So brainwashed have a large portion of the American public become by constant nearly 24 hour a day right wing propaganda and demonization of Democratic leaders on the public airwaves that all that is required in mention of democratic leaders names for them to put reason aside and go into attack mode. That puts about 20% of the voting population firmly in the Republican camp with no regard to facts. Democrats have no such reliable base to count on because, as / the dictionary definition of Liberal,  liberals tend to be open minded and willing to consider all points of view  which makes organizing them lock step impossible. Will Rogers once said, "I don't belong to an organized party, Im a Democrat". He also said, "Democrats never agree on anything, that's why they're Democrats. If they agreed with each other, they would be Republicans."
I do not contend that Democrats are always right. Fact is that I often side with Republicans, or at least did before all the ones that dared to put the good of the country ahead of the good of the party, were driven from office by the far right fringe. What I do contend is that Democrats, by their very nature will not lock step take the country into unnecessary and illegitimate wars or bankrupt the country with welfare for the already rich and unfunded programs. They may lead the country in the wrong direction but at least it won't be in a direction already proven wrong.
In his concluding statement, Steve Chabot, borrowing a line from Ronald Reagan as Republican candidates coast to coast have done, said," I don't think government is the answer, I think it is the problem. I will conclude with another quote from Will Rogers which is, "If you want to be successful, it's just this simple. Know what you are doing. Love what you are doing. And believe in what you are doing." If you want Government to work, its just this simple, vote for candidates who know what they are doing, love what they are doing and believe in what they are doing .
Think about that before you vote.
Sincerely,
