Samaritan Outreach seeks donations

To the editor:
Samaritan Outreach Services has provided emergency food supplies to families in need throughout Highland County for many years. By working with local, regional and national agencies, we are able to provide low-cost, nutritious foods for pennies a meal, but we need your help.
Recently, we received a phone call from a social worker at the hospital. On the night of Oct. 30, an unexpected freeze, along with several inches of snow, caught a man off-guard. He hadn't prepared for winter and had no food resources other than wild game. He was discovered, collapsed, as he was making his way to town. He was rushed to Highland District Hospital, where he was treated for malnutrition and exhaustion. The cold, along with not having enough food, would have been fatal had he not been found in time. There are many stories just like this one. Many of our clients are working-class families who are out of work, seniors who have to choose between heat or groceries and children who go hungry between meals at school.
Because of the increasing need for food, we have had to eliminate direct cash services and now focus all of our resources on providing supplemental food to people in need. In spite of our efforts, we still can't provide enough.
In this struggling economy, we are all challenged to reduce costs to a bare minimum. We don't want to be a burden on your resources. What we do ask is that you take the opportunity to help us in any of several ways. Monetary donations are desperately needed. Many of our food staples are purchased at a reduced cost to help round out a meal for a family. Any financial contribution is welcome, as are food donations. Please contact us at (937) 393-2220 to find out how you can join us in this effort.
