Rainsboro Elementary thanked for hosting Veterans Day program

To the editor:
On Thursday, Nov. 10, I along with many other veterans, attended a Veterans Day program presented by the Rainsboro Elementary School.
The entire program was just outstanding. Each veteran was greeted by a member of the fifth-grade class and escorted to the school gymnasium/auditorium, where we were provided an absolutely delicious meal, served very professionally, by the way, by members of the fifth-grade class.
The table setting included place mats made by other students, K-5. Each of the veterans received “thank-you” cards from the students with the message “Honoring all who served” and “Thank you for keeping me safe.” Each card had the student’s handiwork on it as well as his or her name.
After dinner, we were honored with a presentation of patriotic program, “We Will Not Forget,” by members of the fifth-grade class under the direction of Vicki Mikkelsen.
The closing number, “Hero,” had special significance because it was written by the director, Vicki Mikkelsen, in honor of a former student who lost his life in Afghanistan.
Thanks and commendations to all: Principal Jim Taylor, staff, students, community.
My hope is that all the students in the schools across this great nation were involved in a similar exercise.
We will not forget. As I have reflected upon the program, and at four score and eight (figure it out) years of age, one does reflect: What better way to spend this Thanksgiving season than to consciously remember those who have paved the way for us as individuals and as a nation?
Let us not forget that hardy band of seamen who discovered this land, nor those first settlers who were willing to give up their very lives to live here.
We must never forget our forefathers who fought, and many died, to gain their freedom and assured us ours through their vision as expressed in the greatest document of governance ever written, the United States Constitution!
Thanksgiving is also a time to remember those persons who have helped “pave the way” for us.
Most importantly, we must remember to express our gratitude to God for all of the blessings we have received as individuals and as a nation.
Sincerely,
Paul E. Orr
