A political ad that should be backfiring

By

To the editor:

Have you seen the ad about the U.S. not being economically competitive?

Like many ads being run by right-wing super-pacs, it is cherry picking information to make a case; but this one should be backfiring like crazy if people were actually paying attention.

It shows that the United States has fallen, for the fourth straight year, to seventh most competitive country, according to The Global Competitiveness Report 2112-13 by the World Economic Forum.

It is now led by Switzerland, Singapore, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany.

What the ad fails to point out is that all these countries might be considered socialist states by U.S. standards. All have some form of public health care, etc., and even Singapore, the most conservative, has free health care for the poor.

Instead of making the point that liberalism is the death of economic competitiveness, the ad actually does just the opposite.

Sincerely,
Charles Leach
