Parker House owner clarifies recent litigation

To the editor:
The Parker Hotel has been a popular subject to be carried as a news item in the local papers.
The purpose of this letter to the editor is to correct or clarify some statements made in some publications regarding court rulings on the law regarding private property rights and payment of attorney fees.
The court granted a summary judgment against the city, which stopped their threat to demolish my private property. After this ruling, I filed a motion for the city to reimburse me for attorney fees.
The court ruled that the city must pay the plaintiff for "reasonable" attorney fees expended in this case. By this time, I had paid $20,655.42 to attorneys. The court asked for details about these fees and my attorneys submitted a breakdown. After another hearing regarding fees, the judge made a detailed evaluation
of the fees and ruled that the city pay $9,389.56 to me for reimbursement of the fees I had already paid to attorneys and that the city pay the costs of the entire proceedings, all payable within 30 days.
Even though the reimbursement was less than half of my actual cost, I was impressed with the detailed evaluation and calculations made by the judge.
Sincerely,
Jack Hope
